Environment Site Assessment

WESSLING follows an internationally recognized assessment framework combined with local regulations to provide regorous and efficient services.

With the acceleration of urbanization and industrial restructuring, numerous industrial wastelands (brownfields) are facing opportunities for redevelopment. However, invisible pollution often harbors significant environmental risks and legal liabilities.

As a multinational consulting and testing organization with over 40 years of experience, WESSLING is committed to providing you with one-stop solutions from pollution identification to risk assessment, helping you mitigate risks in project decision-making and realize asset value.

Why Site Investigation?

According to the public report, the soil environment in China is not optimistic, with soil pollution in some areas being severe, particularly concerning industrial and mining wastelands. For investors and developers, sites without prior investigation may harbor high remediation costs and legal disputes.

The national overall soil contamination rate:16.1%

The rate at heavily polluting enterprises and surrounding locations: 36.3%

The rate of soil cadmium contamination exceeding standard:7.0%

WESSLING's Three-Phase Environmental Site Assessment

WESSLING follows an internationally recognized assessment framework combined with local regulations to provide regorous and efficient services.
Our site contamination investigations are generally divided into three phases:

  • Phase I-Pollution Identification
  • Phase II-Pollution Investigation
  • Phase III-Risk Evaluation

The Phase I soil contamination survey is a contamination identification phase that primarily involves data collection, site inspections, and interviews; in principle, no on-site sampling or analysis is conducted. If the Phase I survey confirms that there are no potential sources of contamination, either current or historical, within the site or its surrounding areas, the environmental condition of the site is deemed acceptable, and the survey may be concluded.

The phase II of the soil contamination survey is the verification phase, which focuses primarily on sampling and analysis. If the first phase of the soil indicates the presence of potential pollution sources within or around the site—such as chemical plants, pesticide factories, smelters, gas stations, chemical storage tanks, or solid waste treatment facilities—or activities that may generate toxic or hazardous substances; or if pollution sources within or outside the site cannot be ruled out due to insufficient data or other reasons, a Phase II soil contamination investigation is conducted to determine the types, concentrations (levels), and spatial distribution of contaminants.

Phase III of the soil contamination survey focuses primarily on supplementary sampling and testing to obtain the parameters required for risk assessment and the remediation of soil and groundwater. This phase of the survey may be conducted independently or concurrently with Phase II.
